  • Westerly girls lose overtime game

    WESTERLY — It came down to the wire but ultimately the Westerly Middle girls’ basketball team found itself on the wrong side of a 43-42 overtime loss to Wickford Thursday.

    Westerly trailed 39-38 with 2 seconds left and Isis Hamelin hit one of two free throws to send the game into overtime.

    Westerly coach Charlie Toscano said his team missed a few easy shots in the overtime period.

    Gabriella Celico scored 12 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had seven steals for Westerly.

    Natalie Ritacco scored eight points and grabbed 11 boards. Hamelin scored seven points and had seven rebounds.

    Westerly (6-6, 4-6 Southern Division) next plays at Cole Tuesday at 3:45 p.m.

    Wickford improved to 6-5 in league play.

    WICKFORD — Jalen Valentin, Dave Tiedemann and Taber Gates scored 13 points apiece to highlight the Westerly’s effort in a league loss to Wickford Thursday.

    Wickford led throughout, taking a 21-6 edge after one quarter and a 40-25 lead at halftime.

    Valentin scored all 13 of his points in the second half for Westerly (8-4, 6-4 Southern Division).

    Wickford is 8-3 in the league.

    The Bulldogs play Curtis Corner 3:45 p.m. today at home.
