  • Hellwig wins pair of races

    BRISTOL — Westerly High’s Logan Hellwig was one of two swimmers to win two individual events Sunday at the annual Read-Watmough Invitational at Roger Williams University.

    Hellwig won the 100-yard butterfly in 53.91 seconds and the 50 freestyle in 22.21 helping the Bulldogs take ninth out of 24 teams with 100 points.

    South Kingstown’s Asher Kiely won the 100 free (49.09) and 200 free (1:49.20). The Rebels finished sixth with 152 points.

    Weston High (Massachusetts) won the title with 346 points. Smithfield was the top Rhode Island school, finishing second with 256.

    Phil Miguel was the only other Bulldog to score (top 16) in an individual event. He took 12th in the 50 freestyle with a time mof 24.47.

    The Bulldogs took fifth in the 200 free relay with Mark Walker, Bennett Lanni, Miguel and Hellwig combining for a time of 1:39.22. The same foursome finished sixth in the 400 free relay clocking a 3:41.96.

    Westerly has a home meet today at 3:30 p.m. against Lincoln.
