Gymnasts achieve qualifying scores


MIDDLETOWN — Westerly High’s Emily Roy and Chariho High’s Mackenzie Fox achieved the state qualifying standard in one event each during a gymnastics meet Saturday at the Newport County YMCA.

Roy posted an 8.2 in the floor exercise, which is the state meet qualifying standard. Fox posted a qualifying score in the uneven bars with an 8.6. The qualifying standard for bars is 7.8.

Roy and Fox will have to match or exceed the qualifying standard once more in these two events this season to actually qualify for the state meet.

Roy’s other scores were vault (8.2), beam (6.6) and bars (7.2). Fox’s other scores were vault (8.1), floor (8.05) and beam (7.7).

Westerly’s Megan Roy also competed posting scores of floor (8.1), floor (7.9), beam (6.9) and bars (7.0).

All three competed as individuals as the two schools do not have full teams.

They will be competing again on Jan. 4 at 6:30 p.m. during a meet at Barrington.
