Burr earns top honor

WESTERLY — Westerly’s Randi Burr capped her cross country season with an 18th place finish at the National Junior Olympic Cross Country meet earning All-America honors.

Burr, an eighth grader at Westerly Middle, covered the 4K course in 15 minutes, 3.22 seconds. Burr ran in the 13-14 age group during the race in San Antonio, Texas on Dec. 14.

A total of 377 runners qualified for the nationals. The top 25 are All-Americans.

Burr qualified for the nationals with a fourth-place finish at the Region 1 race in Wappinger Falls, N.Y. A total of 16 regions were represented at the national meet.

Burr won her second straight Rhode Island middle school cross country state title in November.

She won two events, the 3,000 and 800 meters, at the middle school outdoor track championships last spring. She also ran the anchor leg on the 4x400 relay team. Westerly won the state team title when the relay team took first in the final event.

Burr also won the 3,000 and 800 state titles as a sixth grader.

Burr’s older sister, Jackie, is an accomplished runner at Westerly High. And her sister, Michaela, a freshman at Westerly, is an All-State tennis player.
