DeGrooth carries Bulldogs to victory

WESTERLY — Brittany DeGrooth scored a goal and assisted on two others to lead Westerly High’s girls’ soccer team to a 3-0 win over Narragansett on Tuesday.

DeGrooth assisted on goals by Emily Luther and Amy Luther and scored one of her own. She now has 14 goals and five assists in 13 games.

“If Brittany isn’t scoring goals she’s assisting on them. That’s the way she’s played all season,” Westerly coach Clyde Britt said.

DeGrooth set up Emily Luther’s goal with 16 minutes left in the first half to make it a 1-0 game. The junior found the back of the next a little less than two minutes later to make it a 2-0 game. Amy Luther made it 3-0 with 14:47 left in the game to cap the scoring.

“The girls are doing a good job of getting the ball in front of goal and if we can finish we should be in good shape and we’re starting to finish,” Britt said.

Westerly’s Emily Sullivan made six saves and freshman Emma Givens was credited with her first varsity assist.

The win was a big one for the Bulldogs (6-5-2, 5-4-2 Division II) as they came into the contest tied with Narragansett (4-5-2, 4-5-2) for sixth place in the Division II standings.

Westerly is very unlikely to catch any of the top five teams, but a loss could have dropped the Bulldogs several spots in the standings.

The top 12 teams qualify for the Division II tournament.

“We needed that win. That gets us up to 17 points. You can see that the standings are very tight, you lose one or two games and you can drop a few spots in the standings,” Britt said.

Westerly plays at Warwick Vets on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The Hurricanes entered the week tied for first place with Burrillville.

Westerly faces Narragansett in D-II semis

WAKEFIELD — The second-seeded Bulldogs will face the No. 3 Mariners in the semifinal round of the Division II tournament on Thursday at the Prout School at 3:30 p.m.

Narragansett downed sixth-seeded Classical 4-0 on Tuesday in the opening round. In the playoffs, the match is stopped once four points are scored by one team. Westerly had a bye into the semifinal round.

Westerly (11-1) beat the Mariners 4-3 in a tight match on Sept. 24. The Bulldogs won the first and third doubles matches in three sets.

No. 1 Toll Gate will face the winner of No. 4 Portsmouth and No. 5 Providence Country Day in the other semifinal.
