Cassata, Esquirol earn CIAC honor

STONINGTON — Stonington High seniors Emily Cassata and Collin Esquirol will be honored as Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete Award winners at the CIAC annual banquet May 4 at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington.

The scholar-athlete program annually recognizes a senior male athlete and senior female athlete at each CIAC member high school, recognizing achievement in academics, athletics as well as high levels of integrity, self-discipline and courage.

Cassata ranks in the top 10 percent of Stonington’s senior class. She was a captain of the Class S state champion field hockey team and also participates as a girls’ lacrosse player and manager of the girls’ basketball team.

Cassata earned ECC-Small first-team honors in girls’ lacrosse and ECC honorable mention in field hockey. She also is involved in Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Varsity Club, and the SHS chapter of the National Honor Society, Link Crew and Interact Club.

Esquirol, who also ranks in the top 10 of the graduating class, participates in boys’ swimming and crew. He is a leading point scorer for the Ledyard/Stonington co-op boys’ swimming team and competes on the Varsity A boat for the Bears’ crew team in the spring.

Esquirol is also a member of the SHS chapter of the National Honor Society, Link Crew, the Varsity Club, the Bears Broadcasting Company, the American Diabates Association, and the front desk staff at the Mystic Marriott Hotel and Spa.
