Calmar named ECC’s top female athlete in December

STONINGTON — Stonington High girls’ basketball center Margot Calmar, who averaged 21 points and 17 rebounds in six games during December, was named the female ECC Athlete of the Month.

The 6-foot-1 junior led the Bears to a 4-2 record during the month to earn the monthly award, sponsored by the Byrnes Insurance Agency. Calmar earned Most Valuable Player distinction while leading the Bears to the WCCU Holiday Tournament championship. She posted 28 points and 20 rebounds in the title-game victory over Westerly.

Calmar has posted double-double efforts in scoring and rebounding in all 12 Stonington games this season, averaging 19.2 points and 18.1 rebounds for the 9-3 Bears.

A three-sport athlete, Calmar was a key defender on Stonington’s field hockey team that won the Class S state title in the fall. She also plays lacrosse.

Academically, Calmar ranks No. 4 in her class according to eccathletics.org, the website that announces the ECC Athlete of the Month. She is also a member of the Student Government, Mock Trial Team, Varsity Club and Chinese National Honor Society.
