Bears fall against Redmen


STONINGTON — Matt Donahue led Stonington High’s boys’ basketball team with 17 points in a 66-61 loss to Killingly on Wednesday.

The Bears (1-6 overall, 0-2) had three players score in double figures, but it wasn’t enough to get by the Redmen (4-2, 2-0) in the ECC Medium Division contest.

Killingly outscored Stonington 18-11 in the third quarter to erase a 33-29 halftime deficit. The Bears hung around in the fourth, but the Redmen made 12 of 15 from the foul line in the final quarterto hold off Stonington. Killingly made 19 of 26 attempts from the free-throw line in the game.

Nick Hewitt paced the Redmen with a game-high 19 points. Austin Taylor chipped in with 16 points and Brendan Turner and James Saritelli scored 10 apiece for Killingly.

Donahue made four 3-pointers and added four rebounds and two assist to go with his 17 points. Stonington’s sophomore guard is averaging a team-high 18.6 points per game this season.

Matt Mitchell made four 3-pointers and scored a career high 16 points for the Bears. Riley Sorrento finished with 13 points.

Divante White led the Bears on the boards with 13. The senior also scored nine points. He has posted double figure rebounds in three consecutive games and four total this season.

The Bears were coming off a 73-55 loss to ECC-Large Woodstock Academy (6-1, 1-1) on Tuesday night.

Woodstock opened up the game by outscoring the Bears by nine points in both the second and third quarters.

Donahue paced the Bears with 17 points, four rebounds and two assists.

Sorrento finished with 11 points. White had nine points, 13 rebounds and four assists.

Stonington returns to the court on Friday with a home game against Plainfield at 7 p.m.

The Bears are looking for their first ECC Medium Division win and their first victory since beating Chariho on Dec. 27 in the WCCU Holiday Basketball Tournament.
