  • Bears qualify for states

    NEW LONDON — Four Stonington High athletes qualified for their state meets with performances Saturday in a developmental track and field meet at the Coast Guard Academy.

    Three new school records were also established.

    Matt Prue qualified for the Class M meet in the 55 meters and the 300. Prue was fifth in the 55 with a time of 7.09 and third in the 300 (39.54).

    Theresa Kane qualified for the Class S girls’ meet in the 55 with a time of 8.11, good for sixth place. Kane’s mark was also a school record. Lindsay Coxe held the previous school mark with a hand-held time of 7.9. When hand-held times are compared to automated times, .24 seconds is added bringing Coxe’s time to 8.14.

    Kaeli Novak qualified in the 300 (46.03). She finished fourth. Her time was a school record bettering Sophie Moore’s 46.26 in 2013.

    Abby Blanchard qualified in the shot put with a throw of 28 feet, 1 inch. She finished third. Blanchard was fourth in the high jump (4-4)

    Emma Brown established a school record in the pole vault clearing 6-6. No previous record existed.

    Stonington’s 4x180 relay of Mallory Kane, Jennifer Sieczkiewicz, Kenna McWilliams and Theresa Kane took first in 1:43.81.

    Casey Williams, Kenna McWilliams, Sieczkiewicz and Meg Rolfe took second in the 4x360 relay in 4:01.28.

    Stonington’s 4x180 relay team of Kyle Whalen, Clayton Andrews, Christian Curioso and Conor Feeney was second in 1:32.28. The 4x360 relay of Prue, Andrews, Curioso and Feeney was fourth in 3:30.88.

    Several other Bears placed in the top six in their events. Frank Sternberg was fifth in the 600 (1:34.55), Jake Ryan fifth in the shot put (37-7) and Mallory Kane sixth in the long jump (12-11.5).
