  • Burke twins help Dolphins break big records

BROCTON, Mass. — The Westerly-Pawcatuck YMCA swim team broke three very significant records, two weekends ago at the annual South Eastern New England Cluster YMCAs championship meet at Massasoit Community College.

One of the three was among the oldest SENECY meet records.

Jessica Burke won the 100-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 4.36 seconds, erasing the 1:04.56 that a girl from Kent County YMCA swam in 1983.

Burke swims in the 9-10 age group and contributed to the two other record-breaking performances by the Dolpins, who finished third with 1,206 points.

Kent County won the championship with 1,580. South County was second with 1,571 and Bayside YMCA was fourth with 1,190. Sixteen teams scored in the regional meet that includes teams from Massachusetts.

Hannah Benavides, Finella Smith, Jessica Burke and Jenna Burke set a new standard in the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay. They swam the medley in a winning time of 2:16.22. The old record was 2:19.21. The foursome won the freestyle in 2:02.12, shaving .41 seconds off the old record of 2:02.53 set. Both of the old relay records belonged to South County athletes, set in 2010.

Twenty-two other SENECY records were broken, including two previously held by Jack Benavides of the local Dolphins.

Marc Bourgeois of the New Bedford YMCA won the 50 butterfly for 11-12 boys in 27.71. Benavides swam 27.96 in last year’s meet. Bourgeois also broke Benavides’ record in the 50 breastroke, swimming 30.61. Benavides swam 31.26 last season.

Benavides has one SENECY record left — the 9-10 breaststroke (37.92) that he set in 2011.

Benavides won two events in this year’s meet and helped win two relays in the 13-14 age division. He finished first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.20 and the 200 individual medley in 2:09.52 — both of which are new Westerly-Pawcatuck records.

Alex Gomes, Rhys Johnstone, Joseph Hedde Jr. and Benavides won the 200 medley relay in 1:55.16 and Jonathon Eckel, Gomes, Hedde Jr. and Benavides took the 200 freestyle relay in 1:41. 10 — both of which also are new team records.

The Burke twins also broke two team records with winning times — Jessica in the 50 butterfly (31.71) and Jenna in the 50 backstroke (33.86). Jessica Burke also won the 100 free in 1:04.36.

The mother of the Burke twins — Cathy Burke — and grandfather — Jim Knapp — are on the Dolphins’ coaching staff.

In addition to taking part in two SENECY meet-record performances, Hannah Benavides won the 100 IM (1:16.71) for 9-10 girls and the 50 breaststroke (39.49).

Smith, who was on the record-breaking relays, was runner-up in the 50 free (31.32).

Drew Jalbert won two events in the boys’ 9-10 division, taking the 50 backstroke (32.88) and 100 individual medley (1:17.01).

Gomes was second in the 50 free (24.61) and 100 free (55.98).

Hillevi Esquilin took second in the 50 free (27.96) fir 11-12 girls and Laura Wittwer was second in the 200 free (2:08.48) for 13-14 girls.

Keelan Groves, Olivia Pasquin, Megan Marcille and Kelsea Anderson took second in the girls’ 8-and-under 100 freestyle (1:14.86).

Westerly-Pawcatuck holds five SENECY meet records. The four aforementioned records plus one set in 1982 by Valerie Johanssen — 50 breast (32.99) for 11-12 girls.

One of Johanssen’s records fell in this year’s meet when Christina McPhillips of South County won the 200 IM for 11-12 girls in 2:21.21. Johanssen swam 2:22.72 in 1982.

The oldest meet records are two set in 1981.
