Merritt earns first at states

WEST WARWICK — Two local wrestlers qualified for the New England youth championships by virtue of their performance Sunday at the Rhode Island youth state championships.

Kyle Merritt, of Hope Valley, took the state title in the 80-pound Novice division. Merritt won both of his matches including a 5-4 victory against Aidan Fariah, of the Northeast Elite program, in the title bout.

It was Merritt’s sixth straight youth wrestling title. He is 285-19 as a youth wrestler. Merritt, a sixth grader at Chariho Middle, was the middle school state champion at 82 pounds.

Dominic Bonanno, of Westerly, finished second in the 84-pound middle school division. Bonanno was 1-1 and lost 6-2 in the finals.

Merritt and Bonanno both represented the Mayo Quanchi Club of West Warwick.

The youth championships are this weekend in North Andover, Mass.
