Westcott Pizza trumps White Fire uprising

WESTERLY — Westcott House of Pizza nipped White Fire Protection 7-6 Thursday night at Cimalore Field and clinched the No. 3 seed in the Rhode Island Independent Amateur Baseball League.

Eight teams will qualify and WFP (17-8) will clinch the No. 4 seed with a win today at 7:30 p.m. in its regular-season finale. The locals will play Westcott (18-6-1) again, this time at Paine Field in Coventry. There are 14 teams in the league.

White Fire rallied for five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the score at 6, but Westcott scored in the top of the seventh and went on to win.

Bryan Curran had the only multi-hit game for WFP, going 2 for 4. One of his hits was a three-run double in the sixth that drew the locals within 6-5. Curran then scored the tying run on a single by Andy Devereaux.

WFP loaded the bases in the sixth when Mike Jason and Tyler Newell walked and Nick Benoit was hit by a pitch. JJ Sorensen’s single drove in one run before Curran delivered a bases-clearing two-bagger.

Curran was the losing pitcher in relief. He gave up 10 hits, walked one, hit one and struck out three in six innings. Three of the five runs he allowed were earned.

Westcott built its 6-1 lead with two-run innings in the third, fourth and sixth. White Fire plated its first run of the game in the third when Cam Newell led off with a double and scored on a groundout by his brother Tyler Newell.

A win today would give WFP home field advantage in a three-game playoff series that would begin Thursday.
