WFP gets victory in ninth


WESTERLY — Cam Newell hit a two-out, walk-off single to lift White Fire Protection to a 6-5 Rhode Island Independent Amateur Baseball League win against the Testa Law Reds Tuesday night at Cimalore Field.

JJ Sorensen led off the ninth with a double to right center field and moved to third on a sacrifice by Andy Devereaux. Later in the inning Newell delivered the game-winning hit.

Newell finished 2 for 5 with two RBIs. Ben Rice was 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs. Mike Jason went 3 for 3 with a run and a RBI. Nate Cahoone finished 2 for 3 with a run scored.

The Law Reds, led 5-2 after six innings. A Ben Rice RBI single made it 5-3 in the seventh. WFP (17-7) tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the eight on RBI singles from Newell and Jason.

Jason scored in the third inning on a throwing error and Rice drove home Nick Benoit with a sacrifice fly in the inning.

Kaelan Rayner started the game for WFP pitching seven innings. He allowed five runs, (two earned) on eight hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

Devereaux earned the win in relief with two scoreless innings. He struck out one and did not allow a hit in his two innings of work.

The Reds dropped to 13-9 with the setback.

WFP hosts Westscott House of Pizza tonight at Cimalore Field at 7:30 in its final regular-season game. Westcott is 17-6-1.

WFP closes the regular season Saturday against Westscott at Paine Field in Coventry at 7:30 p.m.

The two games will play a big role in determining seedings for the upcoming playoffs.

WESTERLY — Jake Garro pitched a three-hitter allowing just one earned run, but still took the loss Tuesday night.

Garro finished with five strikeouts.

Joe Baldini was 2 for 3 with a double and Connor McGill scored Westerly’s only run.

Westerly dropped to 5-9.
