Ashaway’s James dominates SK Modified race

WATERFORD — Ashaway’s Kyle James was nearly flawless, according to the press relase for the Waterford Speedbowl’s six Saturday night races.

James won the 35-lap SK Modified race by nearly a half track over runner-up Keith Rocco. The Speedbowl’s asphalt oval is 3/8 of a mile.

James took the lead on the outside of Agawam’s Jeff Gallup following the only caution flag of the race, which came on the eighth lap. Once in front, James steamed ahead, amassing his lead.

Rocco moved into second place on lap 20, but had nothing for James without a caution flag. Waterford’s Rob Janovic Jr. finished third.

Rocco, who lives in Berlin, Conn., is the SK Modified points leader. He came into the race with 671. James entered in fifth place with 475.

Hope Valley’s Garrett Denton finished second in the 25-lap Mini Stock feature behind Ken Cassidy Jr. of Lisbon, Conn.

Cassidy looked in top form as he recorded his fourth victory of the season and first since May 31. The division’s all-time wins leader claimed the lead on the 12th lap and never looked back.

Joe Liskiewicz of Preston finished third. Ian Brew of Wood River Junction finished seventh and Dale Sherman of Charlestown was 13th. The race was slowed by two yellow flags.

Denton entered the race leading in points with 539. Cassidy came in fifth with 495.

North Stonington’s Alan Tirrell finished ninth out of 11 in the 25-lap SK Light Modifieds.
