Speedbowl: Denton gets second straight win

WATERFORD — Garrett Denton took the lead early in Saturday night’s Mini Stock race at Waterford Speedbowl and went on to earn his second straight victory.

The Hope Valley 17-year-old has a 24-point lead over Dave Trudeau of Mansfield, Conn., in the Mini Stock standings.

Denton took the lead from Niantic’s Pete Zaikarite eight laps into the 50-lap race and looked dominant at times through stretches of the race, according to the Speedbowl press release.

Denton was challenged by New Haven’s Charles Canfield late but was up to the task and won for the third time this season.

Canfield finished second and Ray Christian III took third. Dale Sherman of Charlestown finished 10th and Ian Brew of Wood River Junction was 20th out of 22 finishers.

In other races, Rich Staskowski of Hope Valley finished fourth in the 50-lap Late Models feature, and Ashaway’s Kyle James took fifth in the 100-lap SK Modifieds. James was with the lead cars throughout the race.
