Mystic one win from title


PAWCATUCK — Mystic/Groton’s 11-12 All-Star softball team scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead and beat Waterford 5-3 in the championship round of the District 10 tournament Friday.

The two teams will play again today at 1 p.m. at the Pawcatuck Little League in the second game of the best-of-three series.

Waterford had taken a 3-1 lead after two innings.

Aspen Ryan pitched all six innings and finished with six strikeouts for Mystic/Groton. Nora Ryan tripled and drove in two runs. Meagan Giwoyna doubled and drove in a pair.

Olivia Carney contributed a single, a double and a RBI. Casey Flax, Allison Georgetti and Ellie Hohlfelder all singled.

Mystic/Groton is 6-0 in tournament play.

Pawcatuck 9-10s.............. 1

EAST LYME — Ledyard pitcher Samantha Money struck out 13 Pawcatuck batters in Friday’s District 10 Little League All-Star game.

Maggie Constantine finished with a single and double for Pawcatuck.

Shea O’Connor singled and scored Pawcatuck’s only run of the game in the second inning.

Elaina Previty and Shea O’Connor combined for eight strikeouts for Pawcatuck. They limited Ledyard to one hit, a double.

Ledyard scored three runs in the third inning.

Pawcatuck (1-1) plays New London Sunday at 5 p.m.

BASEBALL

Narragansett.................. 14

Westerly National 11-12s. 4

NARRAGANSETT — Derek Mason hit a pair of home runs and drove in all four Westerly National runs in the District 3 Little League All-Star tournament Friday.

Narragansett eliminated Westerly from the tournament in the losers’ bracket game.

Paddy Murphy was 2 for 2 and David Burrows singled and walked. Jack Carey, who took the loss, also singled.

Westerly National finished 0-2.

Pawcatuck/N. Ston 9-10s 7

New London..................... 3

NEW LONDON — Pawcatuck/North Stonington scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead on its way to the District 10 Little League tournament win Friday.

Dorian White hit a bases-loaded single to right field in the fourth. White and the three baserunners all ended up scoring on the play.

Nakhi Snyder finished with two hits including a double. He also had a sacrifice fly. White, Brandt Ogden, Wynn Hammond and Luke Costanzo all singled.

Ogden pitched 2-1⁄3 innings to earn the win. He did not allow a run. White pitched the first 3-2/3 innings.

Pawcatuck/North Stonington executed a rundown play in the sixth inning that resulted in an out. White, Nick Larkin and Snyder were involved in the play between home and third.

Pawcatuck/North Stonington (2-1) plays its final game in pool play Sunday against Lyme/Old Lyme at 5 p.m. in New London.

Wickford........................ 11

Chariho 11-12s.................. 5

WICKFORD — Ben Harrison hit a solo home run for Chariho in Friday’s District 3 Little League All-Star Tournament second-round game.

Chariho was playing its first game of the tournament while Wickford downed Warwick Continental in its opener on Thursday.

Josh Smithey, Ryan Allen and Sean Sposato all singled for Chariho.

Sposato was Chariho’s starting pitcher and Harrison came on in relief.

Chariho falls to the losers’ bracket and will play on Monday at 5:30 p.m.

Mystic 9-10s................... 16

Waterford........................ 6

MYSTIC — Jason Erb hit a two-run homer and Mystic finished with 18 hits to remain unbeaten in Pool B play with Friday’s victory at Rossie Field.

Timmy Lynch and Colin Anderson finished with three hits including a triple and double. Cam McGugan, Caleb Mewha and Alex DelCampo also added three hits each. Two of McGugan’s hits were doubles.

Jordan Elci doubled twice, while Will Rochetti, Logan Alvin and Sean Salvador each singled.

Mystic (3-0) plays its final pool game Sunday hosting East Lyme at 5:30 p.m.

Waterford dropped to 2-1.
