Middle school: Westerly starts playoffs with baseball win


WESTERLY — Taber Gates pitched a shutout for six innings as Westerly Middle opened the state baseball tournament with an 8-0 victory against Gallagher Tuesday afternoon.

Gates allowed just three hits and struck out three to earn the win. He did not walk a batter. Vinny Giorno pitched the seventh.

Gates also had a good day at the plate finishing 2 for 4 with a RBI, double and three stolen bases. Brendan Clays was 2 for 3 with a two-run single and a double.

Westerly, the No. 4 seed, led 3-0 after five innings and added five more in the sixth.

Gallagher, the No. 13 seed, finished the season 9-6.

Westerly hosts No. 5 Kickemuit (15-1) or No. 12 Riverside (8-6) on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

WOOD RIVER JCT. — Caitlyn O’Leary was 4 for 4 and Chariho Middle pounded out 16 hits to open the state tournament with a win Tuesday.

O’Leary also doubled twice and scored twice for the Chargers.

Justine Rios finished 3 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs. Sarah Dias, Krysten Morgan, Jordan Parente and Chloe Joslin contributed two hits each. Lacey Baton tripled and scored a run.

Dias pitched all seven innings to earn the win. She struck out five.

Chariho (13-0), the No. 1 seed from the South, hosts Riverside on Friday at 3:30 p.m. in a quarterfinal game.

CUMBERLAND — Westerly Middle scored four runs in the top of the fourth and added four more in the seventh to open the state tournamentfs with the victory.

The game was tied at 4-4 after three innings. The four-run fourth gave Westerly an 8-4 lead. McCourt, the No. 2 seed from the North, came back to make it 8-7 after five, but Westerly put the game away with the big seventh inning.

Amanda Barrese and Cassidy Northup each singled and tripled. Maya Legare also singled and boubled.

Kate Brouillette, who entered the game in third inning earned the win. She had give strikeouts.

Westerly (8-5), the No. 3 seed from the South, travels to Feinstein Middle in Coventry on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
