EAST GREENWICH — Chariho High’s Natale Keefe finished fifth in the 1,500 meters at Tuesday’s reshman state championship meet at East Greenwich High.
Keefe finished the race in 5 minutes, 17.7 seconds for half of Chariho’s four points.
Chariho’s other two points came from a fifth place finish in the 4x800 relay. Nicole Montague, Hallie Linacre, April Rainey and Marissa Alfiero finished the 4x800 in 12:32.7.
The Chargers finished in 25th place out of 30 teams. North Kingstown won with 85 points while Smithfield and La Salle tied for second with 55.
The Chargers will be at the Last Chance Meet at Mt. Pleasant on Saturday.
Chargers miss cut
CRANSTON — Corey Zegarzewski and Nick Chartier both competed in Tuesday’s first round of the state golf championship but failed to qualify for the second day of competition at Cranston Country Club.
Zegarzewski, who finished in the top 12 in the 2013 state tournament, carded an 86 which was 15 strokes over par and six strokes off the cutline. Moses Brown’s Will Dickson was the leader after 18 holes with a 4-under-par 67. Zegarzewski’s score put him in a tie for 39th place.
Nick Chartier came in with a 92 which put him in a tie for 74th.
Another 18 holes will be played at Cranston Country Club today to determine the state champion.
sixth at freshman meet
WESTERLY — Kyle Keefe placed sixth in the 3,000 meters and Andrew De Benedetto was sixth in the 200 at Tuesday’s RIIL freshman state meet at Westerly High.
Keefe ran the 3,000 in 10 minutes and 12.4 seconds while De Benedetto finished the 200 in 25.3.
Chariho totaled six points as a team which put them in a five-way tie for 16th place with Narragansett, Coventry, Ponaganset and Westerly.
Chariho’s other points came from a fourth-place finish in the 4x800 relay. Keefe teamed with Ben Feeney, Ed Golas and Justin Turner to run a 9:28.50.
Chariho seeded seventh
in Division I tourney
WOOD RIVER JCT. — Chariho is seeded seventh and hosts No. 10 Cranston West in a single-elimination Division I playoff game on Friday at 4 p.m.
The Chargers (11-9, 9-7 Division I) finished tied with Coventry, Cranston West and Tolman in the Division I standings. Chariho ended up with the highest seed of the four teams and hosts a game as a result. Chariho lost to the Falcons (10-7, 9-7) on April 11 by the score of 6-2.
The winner of the Chariho-Cranston West tilt advances to play the winner of No. 2 Smithfield and No. 15 Warwick Vets in the double -elimination portion of the tournament. North Kingstown is the top seed in the 16-team field.
Mount St. Charles
WOONSOCKET — The Chargers head into the Division I tournament as the fourth seed from I-South and face Mount St. Charles, the No. 1 seed from theNorth, on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in a quarterfinal match.
Chariho (11-6 overall, 10-6 Division I) swept the Mounties on April 22, winning 25-20, 25-13 and 25-22.
Mount went 11-5 in Division I play with its only win against a Division I-South team coming over Exeter-West Greenwich (0-16).
The winner of Thursday’s quarterfinal will play the winner of South No. 2 Coventry and North No. 3 Cranston East at the Providence Career & Technical Academy on Monday.
