Middle School roundup: Westerly baseball team wins in final inning

WESTERLY — Jack Carey scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning when a potential inning-ending double-play ball was thrown away in the Westerly Middle School baseball team’s 3-2 win over Narragansett Thursday.

The league victory helped Westerly (10-3, 8-2 Southern Division) maintain first place in the Southern Division.

Tom Algier hurled a complete-game eight-hitter for Westerly, which made the most of two singles. Ben Tripp and Brendan Clays had the hits, and Ben Bilotti drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

With the score tied at 2-2 in the seventh, James Pedersen walked and Carey pinch ran. After Austin Frank walked, there was a strikeout before the double-play ball was thrown away to allow the winning run to score.

Narragansett dropped to 3-6, 3-6 Southern Division. Westerly plays Exeter-West Greenwich 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at home.
