WESTERLY — Jack Carey scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning when a potential inning-ending double-play ball was thrown away in the Westerly Middle School baseball team’s 3-2 win over Narragansett Thursday.
The league victory helped Westerly (10-3, 8-2 Southern Division) maintain first place in the Southern Division.
Tom Algier hurled a complete-game eight-hitter for Westerly, which made the most of two singles. Ben Tripp and Brendan Clays had the hits, and Ben Bilotti drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
With the score tied at 2-2 in the seventh, James Pedersen walked and Carey pinch ran. After Austin Frank walked, there was a strikeout before the double-play ball was thrown away to allow the winning run to score.
Narragansett dropped to 3-6, 3-6 Southern Division. Westerly plays Exeter-West Greenwich 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at home.
WOOD RIVER JCT.— Tyler Seltzer doubled three times and drove in four runs as Chariho remained undefeated with a Southern Division rout of Wickford Thursday.
Sarah Dias and Chloe Joslin each had two hits and three RBIs for Chariho (9-0, 8-0 Southern Division).
Allison Gathen struck out eight to gain the pitching victory.
Wickford is 2-5, 2-5 Southern Division. Chariho plays Cutler Middle of Mystic at 3:30 p.m. today in a nonleague game.
EXETER — The Scarlet Knights took a 4-1 lead with four runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back in Thursday’s Southern Division game.
Maya Legare doubled, singled and pitched the first two innings of the game.
Megan Albamonti doubled for Westerly and Kate Brouillette pitched the final four innings, striking out six batters.
Westerly fell to 3-4 in the Southern Division with Thursday’s result and plays at home against Narragansett today at 3:45 p.m.
