Middle school roundup: Big inning helps Chariho beat Westerly in softball


WESTERLY — Chariho Middle’s undefeated softball team took the lead with five runs in the top of the second inning and never again trailed in a 9-5 win against Westerly on Tuesday night.

Westerly, which led 1-0 after one inning, scored three runs in the second to make it 5-4, but the Bulldogs (3-3, 3-3 Southern Division) would not get any closer.

Winning pitcher Sarah Dias hit s two-run single in the big second inning. Michaela Caparco and Colie Joslin had RBI singles.

Justine Rios had three singles for Chariho (8-0, 7-0 Southern Division). Kristen Morgan and Lacey Baton had two singles apiece.

Dias pitched all seven innings. She walked one and struck out six.

Katie Brouillette had three singles and a triple for Westerly. Victoria Carreiro tripled and singled twice. No one else hit safely.

Westerly plays at Exeter-West Greenwich on Thursday at 3:45 p.m.

WAKEFIELD — Westerly Middle exploded for eight runs in the fourth inning and nine in the fifth in a Southern Division game called after five innings because of mercy rule.

Tom Algier and Ben Tripp collected two hits each for Westerly (9-3, 7-2 Southern Division). Taber Gates hit a two-run double, and Mike Fiore and Cole Riley each doubled and drove in two runs in the win.

Vinny Giorno pitched four innings, scattering four hits and striking out five for the win. Monsignor Clarke fell to 1-6, 1-6 Southern Division. Westerly hosts Narraansett Thursday, 3:30.
