Westerly Middle baseball, softball teams win


NORTH KINGSTOWN — Winning pitcher Tom Algier fired a three-hitter and struck out 11 in seven innings to power the Westerly Middle baseball team over Davisville, 5-1, in a Southern Division first-place showdown Tuesday.

Algier also contributed offensively with two hits and a RBI for Westerly (8-2, 6-1 Southern Division). Taber Gates had a double, two walks and two stolen bases. Ben Bilotti and James Pedersen added RBI singles.

Westerly scored three runs in the fifth inning to stretch a 2-1 lead to 5-1.

Davisville fell to 6-2, 6-1 Southern Division. Westerly plays 3:30 p.m. Thursday at home against Wickford.

NORTH KINGSTOWN — Amanda Baresse homered, doubled and singled Tuesday in a Southern Division game called after five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Baresse’s homer was a three-run shot over the fence. Winning pitcher Maya Legare hit two doubles and Kate Brouillette had two singles.

LeGare pitched five innings, allowing just two hits while striking out four.

Davisville is 0-4. Westerly (3-2, 3-2 Southern Division) plays 3:45 p.m. at Wickford Middle School Thursday.
