Middle school: Bulldogs prevail in 8th inning

NORTH KINGSTOWN — Westerly’s Brendan Clays delivered a safety-squeeze RBI bunt single to tie the score at 3-3 in the top of the seventh inning and Matt Brissette added another safety-squeeze bunt single to drive in the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth to key the Bulldogs’ 4-3 comeback win Wednesday.

Tom Algier was Westerly’s starting pitcher and hurled seven strong innings in the Southern Division game, striking out 10, allowing four hits and no earned runs to get the win. Taber Gates pitched a scoreless eighth to get the save for the Bulldogs (2-0).

Gates had two hits for Westerly, which plays at 3:30 p.m. Friday at home against Monsignor Clarke.

WESTERLY — Westerly Middle jumped to a 5-0 lead after two innings and rode the complete-game pitching of Maya Legare the rest of the way in a win over Wickford in the Bulldogs’ season opener Wednesday.

Legare allowed just four hits on the mound and added a triple at the plate. Cassidy Northup had two hits and Amanda Baresse doubled in the victory.

Westerly plays 3:30 p.m. today at Chariho.
