Chariho postseason roundup: Silvestri rebounds to get first-team honor

WOOD RIVER JCT. — Delaney Silvestri has battled hamstring and foot injuries during her Chariho High girls’ track and field career, but that hasn’t stopped her from racking up postseason honors.

The Chargers’ senior capped her final indoor season with a Division II-Sullivan first-team selection after winning the 300-meter dash in 44.03 seconds at the league meet.

“She’s self-motivated and always strives to get better. Despite missing much of her junior season with a hamstring injury and suffering foot problems, she’s been a top sprinter for us in the last three years,” Chariho coach Karen Allen said.

Silvestri also made the Division II-Sullivan third team in the 4x200 relay with sophomore Cameron Fournier, junior Arin Demers and freshman Gabrielle Harris.

“We could always rely on Delaney in the sprints, middle distances and relays,” Allen said.

As a sophomore, Silvestri was Division I-Headley third team in the 300 in 43.6 and as a junior she was Division II-Sullivan second team in the 55-meter dash. Her injuries forced her to miss the 2013 state meet.

Silvestri also earned Academic All-State honors along with teammate Alexis Marsella, a high jumper and relay runner. Academic All-State selections must be members of the National Honor Society and at least a three-year track participant who are seniors.

Junior Isabel Baker earned Division II-Sullivan second-team honors for finishing second in the league 3,000-meter run in 10:57.79 and Sullivan third team in the 1,000 (3:20.32). Baker made the Large School third team in the 3,000 (10:58.92).

As a sophomore Baker was Sullivan second team on the 4x800 relay.

Senior Katerina Irwin received Sullivan third-team honors for her third-place finish in the championship meet. The Chargers put together one of their best records in years, posting a 6-3 mark and a third-place finish in the Sullivan Division.
