Unbeaten Bailey going for NE title

EXETER, N.H. — Westerly’s Isaiah Bailey, a freshman at Phillips Exeter Academy, finished undefeated in the regular season for the school’s wrestling team.

Bailey, a 113-pounder, won 17 matches, 12 of them by pin, and last weekend won the Class A championship. He had a bye in the first round, then recorded a pair of first-period pins to take the title.

Bailey is the No. 1 seed in the New England Prep Championship Tournament which will be held today and Saturday at Brooks School in North Andover, Mass.

Two weeks ago, Bailey beat the defending champion, Brandon Caffrey of Pomfret. He also pinned the No. 2 seed in New England, handing David Crosby (Brooks Academy) his only loss.

According to the academy’s website, there are at least five wrestlers currently competing at the college level.

Jon Dolan is a two-time Division 3 All-American and a tri-captian in his senior year at Williams College. Lars Ojuku is also a tricaptian at Williams College and also a senior.

Matt Stolpinsky, a junior at Navy, qualified for the Division I NCAA Championships as a sophomore. Steve Campbell is a senior wrestling at Wesleyan University, and James is wrestling at John Hopkins University.

Also, Grant Whitmer, class of 1994, was fifth in the Olympic trials in 2004. He won the 2006 U.S. Armed forces Greco-Roman wrestling championship.
