CUMBERLAND — Westerly Middle stands in first place after the first day of the state middle school wrestling tournament Saturday at Cumberland High School.
The Bulldogs led the 25-team field with 95.5 points, five ahead of second-place Barrington. Semifinals, finals and consolation matches resume today at Cumberland.
Westerly placed eight wrestlers in the semifinals, setting up itself well for the second day of competition.
At 82 pounds, Dominic Bonanno is 1-0 with a pin and semifinal bound. At 104, Brady Holdredge is 2-0 with pinfall wins of 26 seconds and 20 seconds. Ethan Kadar reached the 112 pound semifinals with a pinfall victory. Jacob Schafer is 2-0 at 140 with pin victories of 34 seconds and 1:30.
Westerly dominated the heavier weights. Keith Roberts is in the 170-pound semifinals, pinning to win in his only match. Shawn Moore registered a 1:13 pin to reach the 185-pound semis. Max Davis pinned his opponent in 19 seconds to make the 200-pound semis. Ryan Rougier won by pin at 43 seconds to advance to the 275-pound semis.
Sam Luzzi went 1-2 at 70 pounds, Nayati Brown is alive in the consolation bracket with a 2-1 record at 96, Raul Santiago went 1-2 at 119, Dominic Johnson went 1-2 at 126, Sam Luzzi went 1-2 at 70 pounds, Ryan O’Donnell is alive in the consolations with a 1-1 mark at 148.
Chariho 4th in states
CUMBERLAND — Chariho Middle stands in fourth place after the first day of the state middle school tourney with 74 points.
Chariho’s Kyle Merritt went 2-0 at 82 pounds to reach the semifinals where he will face Westerly’s Dominic Bonanno. Ethan Blanchard made the 119-pound semifinals after a 2-0 day with two pins.
Ricky Evola is alive in the consolation round with a 2-1 record at 104, and Eddie Fernandez is 2-1 at 133. Joe Stanfield was 1-2 at 96 pounds.
