WAKEFIELD — Coming off the high of winning the WCCU Holiday Basketball Tournament in dramatic fashion Monday, the Westerly High boys’ basketball team quickly discovered the team to beat in Division II-South in the first game of the New Year Saturday.
Prout, which finished second to Westerly in last year’s standings, improved to 4-1, 2-0 in Division II-South with a 75-47 victory against the Bulldogs.
Prout returned a nice nucleus from its squad last year that finished 13-5, two games behind Westerly, in the division. The immediate impact of 6-foot-7 freshman center Tomas Murphy has added an extra dimension this season. Murphy scored 16 points in the first half, putting Westerly in a 34-22 halftime deficit, and finished with 21 points. Guard Chris DeClemente added 15 and Alex DeLuca scored 13.
“The big kid was tough to handle early on, but we cut the gap to seven early in the second half,” Westerly coach Mike Gleason said. “Then Prout made eight or nine shots in a row to blow it open. They have two really good players with Murphy and DeClemente. Tonight, their secondary guys came up big.”
Jacee Hamelin scored 19 points and added 10 rebounds to pace the Bulldogs (2-4, 0-2 Division II-South). Kyle Allen added nine points and Alex Morgan eight.
