Bulldogs lose to Pilgrim

WARWICK — Pilgrim never trailed and handed the Westerly High girls’ soccer team a 3-2 loss in Tuesday’s Division II game.

The Patriots (10-2-1, 10-2-1 Division II) built a 3-1 lead with about 7 minutes remaining.

Westerly’s Brittany DeGrooth scored her 16th goal on a free kick from about 25 yards to make it 3-2 with less than four minutes left.

Westerly (7-6-2, 6-5-2 Division II) did get one more good opportunity, but could not score.

Pilgrim led 2-1 at the half including a goal with 45 seconds remaining off a corner kick.

Westerly’s Mackenzie Donnelly scored with about 10 minutes remaining in the first half and Amy Luther had the assist. The play started when DeGrooth won the ball on the right side and passed it back toward the goal. Luther then played the ball to Donnelly, who scored in heavy traffic, according to coach Clyde Britt.

Haley Nix played well for the Bulldogs marking Pilgrim’s top scorer, Britt said.

Both teams finished with 13 shots. Westerly got off three corner kicks and the Patriots had two. Westerly keeper Emily Sullivan made 10 saves.

Westerly hosts first-place Lincoln (11-0-2) on Thursday at 6 p.m.
