Westerly gets tie, stays in hunt

WESTERLY — For the fourth time in seven games the Westerly High boys’ soccer team had to settle for a tie.

Westerly coach Les Ahern said his team should have come away with a win in Monday’s Division II game but ultimately ended even with Coventry, 1-1.

“We had three really great chances in the first half but we just weren’t able to cash in on any of them,” Ahern said. “We should have gone in up 3-1 but we were down 1-0 at halftime.”

The Bulldogs outshot the Oakers 17-6 and had six corners to Coventry’s one but didn’t pull even until the second half.

Terrell Norris worked the ball deep into the zone to the right of Coventry’s keeper centered the ball toward forward Mike Johns.

Ahern said the ball glanced off two defenders but it still got to Johns quickly enough for him to one-time the ball into the net for the equalizer.

The Oakers went to 8-3-3 overall and in Division II.

Billy McCormick made two saves for the Bulldogs.

Westerly (5-6-4, 4-6-4 Division II) dropped from tied for 11th in the 16-team league to 12th. The top 12 make the playoffs.

Westerly and Mount Pleasant, which lost to Moses Brown, 3-0, came in tied for 11th but were passed by Middletown, which shut out Pilgrim 2-0.

Middletown has 17 points, Westerly has 16 and Mount Pleasant 15. Teams get three points for a victory.

Westerly visits Classical (4-3-6) on Friday at 5:30 p.m. for its final game. Middletown plays Narragansett (2-10-1) and Mount Pleasant plays Mt. Hope (6-4-3).

Warwick Vets ...................2

WARWICK — Westerly pulled out two straight close wins to defeat Warwick Vets in Monday’s Division II-South match — 25-21, 22-25, 26-24, 25-23.

Julianna Morrone made a couple of game-saving dives that were followed by two service points by Lia Gabrielle, and a kill when the Bulldogs closed out the pivotal third game, said coach Molly Morrone.

One of Gabrielle’s points came on an ace.

“The fourth game was pretty much back and forth and when it was 21-21 I called a timeout,” Morrone said. “I told them no matter what that they had to play tough and had to have the attitude that they had in the prior game that nothing hits the ground. When we do that we start winning some volleyball.”

The Bulldogs heeded her advice, Morrone said.

Megan Lacey served for the final point of the match with the Bulldogs leading 24-23.

“She hit a rocket of a serve and they couldn’t return it. I felt good when I saw her go to the line. She’s probably one of my strongest servers.”

Julianna Morrone led the Bulldogs (3-14, 3-13 Division II-South) in kills with six and aces with five.

Izzy Carey had three kills and three blocks. Olivia Obertello had seven digs. The versatile Gabrielle had three aces, two blocks and four assists. Rachel Phelps also had two blocks.

Vets falls to 2-14 overall and 1-14 in Division II-South.

Westerly’s next match is Friday at Pilgrim, 6:30 p.m.
