Burr falls in state tourney

PAWTUCKET — Westerly High freshman Michaela Burr absorbed the first loss of her career, losing in the quarterfinals of the state tennis tournament play to fellow freshman Lauren Bertsch, of La Salle Academy, 7-5, 6-4, Saturday at Slater Park.

Burr (16-1) was seeded first among Division II players and fifth overall. Bertsch, the No. 1 singles player for powerful Division I La Salle, currently in second place in its division, was the seeded fourth overall in the field of 32.

In the first and second rounds on Friday, Burr beat Bay View’s Patty Gauthier in the first round, 6-2, 6-0, and Lincoln’s Jamie Pine in the second round, 6-3, 6-3.

The semifinals and finals are set for today at Slater Park.

In doubles play Saturday, Westerly’s Renee Cordio and Emily Palma, seeded third in Division II, won their first-round match against Bay View’s duo of Cristina Marsocci and Gabby Federici, 6-3, 6-3.

The Bay View duo was seeded fourth in Division I. Cordio and Palma lost in the quarterfinals to Moses Brown’s Maddie Gorgi and Racy Moran, 1-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Westerly returns to action in the Division II state team tournament. The Bulldogs received a bye in Tuesday’s first round and will debut in the semifinals Thursday at Prout.
