Westerly prevails in shutout


WESTERLY — Skye Byrne scored a pair of goals as the Westerly Middle girls’ soccer team shut out Narragansett 5-0 on Tuesday.

Jenna Murray, Brittany Deus and Lauren Dobson also scored for Westerly (3-1-3). Westerly hosts Cutler Middle on Wednesday at 3:45 p.m.

NARRAGANSETT — Westerly dropped to 2-5 with Tuesday’s loss.

Westerly keeper Teddy McGuire made four saves. Ronan Murphy (defender) and Lucas Gaccione (defender) also played well for the Bulldogs.

Westerly plays at Wickford on Oct. 15 at 4 p.m.

GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY

Bulldogs suffer first loss

NORTH KINGSTOWN — Westerly Middle’s Randi Burr and Gabriella Celico snared the top two places, but the Bulldogs dropped their first race of the season, Tuesday against Wickford.

Burr was first in 11 minutes, 47 seconds over the 1.92-mile course at Wilson Park. Celico was second in 12:30.

Wickford edged Westerly 28-31, while the Bulldogs beat Narragansett 21-34. Wickford also beat Narragansett 21-40.

Kata Cummings (7th, 13:28), Dakota Busch (14th, 13:57) and Victoria Carreiro (15th, 14:01) also scored for Westerly.

The Bulldogs (5-1) compete on Tuesday at Curtis Corner, South Kingstown

BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY

Walker takes third

NORTH KINGSTOWN — Westerly’s Matthew Walker took third in Tuesday’s race at Wilson Park.

He finished in 11 minutes, 34 seconds over the 1.92-mile course at Wilson Park.

Other Westerly scorers were John Luzzi (fifth, 12:19), Richard Boylan (seventh, 12:28), Taber Gates (13th, 12:48) and Dominic Johnson (20th, 13:01).

Westerly (3-3) lost to Wickford 20-36, but beat Narragansett 25-31. Wickford also beat Narragansett 19-41.

Westerly runs again on Oct. 15 at Curtis Corner.
