Bulldogs sweep Islanders

MIDDLETOWN — For the third time this season Westerly High’s girls’ tennis team won via a sweep with a 7-0 win against Middletown in Tuesday’s Division II-Suburban crossover match.

Michaela Burr won at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-1 and Lani Koppermann took second singles 6-4, 6-1.

Grace Gagnon won at third singles 7-5, 1-6, 10-7 and Lana Gunn won 6-3, 6-3 at fourth singles.

Margo Douglas and Kate Kuzmic won 6-1, 6-0 in first doubles. Laura Cruso and Julia DeGrooth took second doubles 6-1, 6-0. Emily Palma and Renee Cordio won at third singles 6-4, 6-2.

The Bulldogs host Ponaganset Monday at 4 p.m.

PROVIDENCE — The Purple evened the game at 1-1 with a goal just before halftime and held the Bulldogs off the board in the second half of Tuesday’s Division II game.

Classical (2-5-1, 2-5-1 Division II) scored with 20 seconds to play in the first half when Jennifer Mencos took a long shot that kissed the crossbar and went in.

Westerly (4-3-2, 3-3-2 Division II) took a 1-0 lead when Brittany DeGrooth scored her ninth goal with 6:51 left in the first half. DeGrooth converted a shot from just inside the 18.

Westerly coach Clyde Britt said the Bulldogs had some solid scoring chances in the second half, but fired several shots right at Classical keeper Adriana Costa.

Westerly hosts Johnston at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

CRANSTON — Julianna Morrone led the Bulldogs with four kills and seven digs in Tuesday’s Division II-South match.

The Falcons (7-3, 7-3 Division II) won the first set 25-14, dropped the second 25-18, and went on to take the next two 25-8 and 25-15.

Megan Lacey finished with six aces, three kills and five digs for Westerly (1-10, 1-9 Division II).

Izzy Carey chipped in with three kills and five blocks. Lia Gabrielle contributed five digs, a block and two assists.

Kerry Tiedemann served a couple of aces and had four digs.

The Bulldogs host Cranston East on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
