Burr, Celico break record


WARWICK — Randi Burr and Gabriella Celico finished 1-2 and each broke the course record to highlight the Westerly Middle’s girls’ cross country team’s sixth-place finish at the Ocean State Invitational eighth-grade race Saturday at Goddard Park.

Burr, the defending middle school cross country state champions, covered the 2K course in 7:11.80 and Celico finished in 7:17.0.

Rounding out the scoring for Westerly were Dakota Busch (41st, 8:35.8), Victoria Carreiro (59th, 8:59.4) and Maya Legare (131st, 10:12). Westerly was sixth out of 16 schools, and 191 girls competed.

Westerly’s seventh grade girls placed seventh out of 18 led by Kata Cummings (16th, 8:16.5), Olivia Chiaradio (35th, 8:50.4), Hedy Goodman (52nd, 9:08.9), Kate Brouillette (57th, 9:11.4) and Ciara Flood (78th, 9:24.1).

Westerly’s sixth grade girls were 12th of 17 schools led by Sydney Walker (16th, 8:39.8), Ava Morosini (36th, 9:14.5), Abigail Turano (10:36.4), Julia Garro (10:37.7) and Jessica Ferraro (125th, 11:01.0).

BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY

Westerly 8th graders 4th

WARWICK — Matthew Walker’s seventh place finish paced Westerly’s fourth- place finish at the Ocean State Invitational Saturday at Goddard Park.

Walker covered the 2K course in 6:56. Also scoring for Westerly were John Luzzi (16th, 7:20), Taber Gates (38th, 7:34.9), Richard Boylan (68th, 7:52.9) and John Walker (131st, 8:30.5). The field was 243 runners.

Westerly’s seventh grade boys placed 14th of 20 teams. John Carey (65th, 8:13.8), Aaron Calouro (94th, 8:34.4), Mark Buckley (126th, 9:00), Elliott Greenberg (137th, 9:16.2) and Bereket Janat (152nd, 9:27) scored in the 221-runner field.

The Bulldog’s sixth grade team was 10th out of 22 teams. Tim Colton (27th, 8:16), Colby Makin (62nd, 8:56), Aaron Healy (89th, 9:20.4), Patrick Murphy (92nd, 9:23.8) and Chas Morgan (108th, 9:38.8) scored in the 217-runner field.

NORTH STONINGTON — Nate Cherenzia contributed two goals and two assists to help the Wheeler Middle School boys’ soccer team blank Fields Memorial,

Isaac Wilkinson added two goals for Wheeler, while Ryan Condon, Seth Jones, Chris Orr and Jack Kinard scored one each. Condon also notched two assists.

Ian Spracklin and Kody Lewis combined to make two saves for the Lions’ third consecutive shutout. Wheeler plays Tuesday 4 p.m. at home against Sterling.
