Stonington earns win in overtime

NEW LONDON — Stonington High’s Leonardo Aguirre scored the winning goal four minutes into sudden death overtime lifting the unbeaten boys’ soccer team to a 2-1 win against New London Saturday morning.

Aguirre scored from about 15 yards out. Jake DeLapp had put a shot on goal that hit the crossbar. Aguirre got the rebound and put in the game-winner.

Aguirre had scored the Bears’ first goal with about 1 minute, 30 seconds left in the first half to make it 1-0.

New London (2-3, 0-3 ECC-Medium) tied the game about 18 minutes into the second half.

Stonington (6-0-1, 3-0 ECC-Medium) finished with 13 shots and the Whalers had three.

Stonington hosts Waterford on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
