Bulldogs topple Mariners

NARRAGANSETT — One game after losing a Division II-Suburban B showdown to undefeated Toll Gate, 5-2, the Westerly High girls’ tennis team topped another undefeated team in Narragansett, 4-3, Tuesday in an extremely close and well-played match.

Westerly (6-1, 6-1 Division-II B) now stands tied in second place with Narragansett, which owns the exact same record. The difference in this match was a pair of three-set victories by Westerly’s No. 1 doubles’ team of Emily Palma and Renee Cordio and No. 2 doubles’ team of Marco Douglas and Kate Kuzmic.

The sophomore duo of Palma and Cordio won at No. 1 by scores of 6-3, 2-6 and 6-3. Douglas and Kuzmic prevailed, 3-6, 6-4 and 6-4.

“It came down to almost the last point as we finished up playing under the lights,” Westerly coach Marvin Gordon said. “This was a nice bounce-back effort for us.”

Westerly was tied 2-2 after the four singles matches. Freshman No. 1 player Michaela Burr won her match, 6-2, 6-0. Freshman No. 2 player Lani Kopperman was victorious in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-3.

Burr raised her individual record to 7-0, while Kopperman and the doubles’ squad of Palma and Cordio each rose to 6-1 on the season.

“I’ve said it before, but the two freshmen at No. 1 and No. 2 singles came into the season in excellent form after playing all summer,” Gordon said. “It’s made a huge impact on the team.”

Westerly plays host to Classical 4 p.m. Thursday. The state qualifying tournament begins 9 a.m. Saturday at Slater Park in Pawtucket.

Cranston — Samantha Canales’ goal off a corner kick keyed a three-goal run by Cranston East in a Division II upset of Westerly Tuesday.

It was the first victory in five matches for Cranston East (1-4, 1-4 Division II). The Thunderbolts scored three straight goals after Mackenzie Donnelly scored with an assist from Emily Luther just over eight minutes into the game for Westerly (4-2-1, 3-2-1 Division II).

“We were playing a last-place team that has scored just three goals all season coming into the game,” Westerly coach Clyde Britt said. “We underestimated them and ended up in the losing column.”

Emily Luther scored with an assist from Amy Luther with five minutes left to cut the gap to 3-2. Westerly outshot Cranston East, 17-15, and held a 9-2 edge in corner kicks. Emily Sullivan made 12 saves for Westerly, which plays host to Burrillville 6 p.m. Thursday.
