CHARLESTOWN — The Chariho Junior Varsity Cowboys came from behind in the fourth quarter to gain a 16-16 tie with the Burrillville Patriots in a Rhode Island Pre-Teen Youth Football Conference game on Sunday.
There are no tie-breaking overtimes during the regular season.
Trailing 16-8 with seven minutes left in the game, Joe Heath scored on a 2-yard run to cut the margin to one. Heath then caught a conversion pass from Levi King to tie the game.
Chariho (1-0-1) made a goal-line stand at its 5-yard line with four minutes left to prevent another score by Burrillville (1-0-1). The Cowboys then advanced to their 30-yard line when time ran out.
The Patriots led 8-0 in the first quarter on a 3-yard score and conversion run. The Cowboys tied the score in the second quarter on a 1-yard plunge by Joe Stanfield and a conversion pass from Levi King to Heath.
Chariho’s Lawson Laurent recovered a Patriot fumble. Zack Miller and Jack Haxton each had four tackles.
The Cowboys have a rematch at Burrillville on Sunday at noon.
JUNIOR PEE WEES
CHARLESTOWN — The undefeated Cowboys (2-0) scored a touchdown in each quarter while shutting out the winless Patriots (0-2) on Sunday.
Owen Gillis scored two touchdowns — one on a 20-yard run in the first quarter and the second on a 50-yard run on a key block by running back Zaiden Potter on the final play of the game.
Konnor Perrin plunged one yard to score in the second period after having run 25 yards on the previous play. He threw a conversion pass to Collin Fitts to give Chariho a 14-0 halftime lead.
Perrin passed the Cowboys for eight more points in the third quarter, on a 35-yard TD-pass to Fitts and a conversion pass to Corbin Brown.
Brown and Caleb Maggs each had five tackles on defense for Chariho.
The Junior Pee Wees again play Burrillville on Sunday in a road game at 10:30.
CHARLESTOWN — The Patriots led 14-0 at halftime and held on for Sunday’s win.
Trailing 20-7 in the fourth quarter, the Cowboys’ Brine Wotherspoon scored his second touchdown of the game on a 25-yard run to close within six points. But the Patriots scored again for the final 12-point margin.
Chariho (0-2) had scored on an 80-yard, 15-play drive in the third quarter on a 20-yard run by Wotherspoon. With a conversion run by Hunter LaBoeuf, the Cowboys trailed 14-7.
The Patriots recovered a Cowboy fumble in the fourth quarter and scored on a 4-yard run to up their lead to 13.
Wotherspoon totaled 85 rushing yards for the Cowboys.
The Chariho Varsity has a bye next week.
CHARLESTOWN — The Patriots (2-0) led 30-0 at halftime.
Middle linebacker Mason Paine had seven tackles (two for losses) for the Cowboys (1-1).
Chariho’s Maxx Couri caught an 18-yard pass from Rogan Wotherspoon. The offensive line was led by the blocking of tackle Jacob Schneider.
Chariho travels to Burriville on Sunday for a rematch starting at 3 p.m.
