Barres wins Block Island 15K race


BLOCK ISLAND — Spyros Barres of Mystic captured first place in the 38th Run Around the Block 15K road race in a time of 54:33 Saturday.

Barres, 50, won by 1:08 over second-place Steve Brightman of Providence in the field of 292 runners. Mystic’s Stan Mickus was third overall in 59:17.

Clair Gadrow of Wakefield was the first woman to finish in 10th place overall in a time of 1:03.21.

Rounding out the top 10 local male finishers were: Jack Morehouse of Stonington (28th, 1:09.02), Steven DeCastro of Pawcatuck (39th, 1:11.59), Michael Fox of Hope Valley (59th, 1:15.32), Ron Fusaro of Westerly (69th, 1:17.14), David Rizzo of Ashaway (78th, 1:18.23), Gustavo Santos of Westerly (115th, 1:22.16), Brian Nimiroski of Hope Valley (120th, 1:22.53) and Robert Pompel of Charlestown (223rd, 1:34.41).

The only local female finishers were: Amanda Farrar of North Stonington (98th, 1:20.40), Dieneke Andrus of Westerly (104th, 1:21.19), Indra Boving of Hope Valley (151st, 1:26.54) and Morgan Rein of Mystic (257th, 1:41.0).
