Conversion run helps Westerly Juniors to victory


EAST LYME — C.J. Scott’s conversion run on a second quarter touchdown proved to be the difference as the Westerly Juniors beat East Lyme 7-6 Saturday in a Southern New England Youth Football Conference game.

Peter Fusaro, who rushed for 75 yards, scored Westerly’s touchdown on a 42-yard run. East Lyme scored early in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs stopped the conversion run.

Isaiah Plourde had two fumble recoveries including one he caused. Austin Frink caused a fumble and contributed a sack. Defensive lineman Josh Lacerte finished with eight tackles.

Scott rushed for 40 yards and Jonathan Brutcher contributed 30 yards rushing.

Defensive tackle Cole Kugler also played well for Westerly.

Westerly (1-1) plays at Norwich on Sunday at noon.

EAST LYME — East Lyme stopped Westerly at the 2-yard line in overtime to turn back the Bulldogs.

Westerly (0-2) had tied the score at 12-12 in the third quarter when Luke Marley caught a 50-yard pass from Jawarie Hamelin.

Hamelin broke four tackles and threw the ball 25 yards in the air to Marley, who ran the rest of the way for the score.

East Lyme had the ball first in overtime and scored on an 8-yard run.

Westerly scored its first touchdown in the first quarter on a 60-yard kickoff return by Luke Gencarella.

Tyler Rodriguez finished with two tackles for a loss and a sack for Westerly. Dawson Barrese and Gencarella both finished with six tackles, two for a loss. They also shared a sack.

Donny Dumsar recovered a fumble.

Westerly travels to Norwich on Sunday for a 10 a.m. game.

EAST LYME — Ryan Holloway scored both Westerly touchdowns, but the Bulldogs dropped to 0-2 with the loss.

Holloway scored on a 5-yard run in the second quarter that capped a 60-yard drive. Jalen Valentin caught a 15-yard pass in the march.

Holloway scored on another 5-yard run in the fourth quarter behind the blocking of tackle Victor Gervasini and guard Taylor Bernardoni. Holloway had a 65-yard run in the drive and Valentin converted a fourth and five.

Jacob Schafer kicked the extra point to make it 30-14.

Gervasini had five tackles for a loss and blocked a PAT. Bernardoni contributed four tackles for a loss and Holloway had three. Quarterback Vinny Giorno passed for 70 yards.

Westerly travels to Norwich on Sunday for a 2 p.m. contest.
