WESTERLY — The Rhode Island Riptide handed the Woonsocket Wardogs their first loss of the season on Saturday, winning 16-7 at Westerly High.
Maurice McClellan scored on a 42-yard catch and run in the second quarter. Mike Wilson followed with a two-point conversion run that put the Riptide in front 8-7.
Wilson hit Jamar McClellan with a 45-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, then capped the scoring with a conversion toss to tight end Ryan Mercado.
The Riptide defense made four sacks, intercepted two passes and held the Wardogs to minus-32 rushing yards on 15 carries.
The Wardogs are tied with the Cape Cod Seadogs for first place in the AA South Division of the New England Football league at 5-1.
The Riptide (4-2) are third in the six-team league. Their next game is Saturday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. against the Whaling City Clippers at Paul Walsh Field in New Bedford, Mass.
