Chariho’s Kyle Abbott takes ball four in the bottom of the second inning. Abbott later scored the winning run in the sixth inning.

    Chariho rallies for win

HOPE VALLEY — Chariho’s 10-11 Little League All-Star baseball team began District 3 play with a walk-off 3-2 win against Coventry National on Monday at Dow Field.

After watching Coventry score a couple of runs in the top of the sixth to take a 2-1 lead, Chariho was able to answer with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out the victory.

Kyle Abbott scored the winning run when Ryan Allen hit a fly ball to the Coventry shortstop, who had the ball glance off his glove. Chariho manager Mark Smithey said the hit was a catchable fly ball but since the infield was drawn in with the bases loaded and one out, the play was a bit more difficult.

Chariho had tied the game at 2-2 earlier in the inning when Ben Harrison singled and eventually scored when Ryan Gamelin reached on a fielder’s choice.

Harrison had a big day at the plate and on the mound. Harrison singled twice and pitched 4-1/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.

Chariho scored a run in the bottom of the second when Abbott walked, stole second, reached third on a passed ball and came home on another passed ball.

Monday’s game was one of four first round games played in the District 3 10-11 baseball tourney. With the win Chariho advances to face Warwick National on the road tonight at 5:30 Warwick National is one of four teams that had a bye through the first round of the winners’ bracket.

WATERFORD — John Marcolina homered, doubled and singled to help power the Mystic 11-12 Little League All-Stars past Waterford Monday and into the District 10 semifinals.
