Preview: Chariho boys’ lacrosse

Head coach: Mike Foley (2nd season) Assistant coach: Scott Merritt

Last year: Chariho went 0-12 in its first season, all games being Division III league contests.

Returning to varsity:

Seniors: Rob Wood (MF, captain), Josh Banker (Attack), James Rooney (Goalie). Juniors: Mitch Renner (Attack, captain), Regan Beaudreau (Goalie, captain), Nick Cleary (Attack), Pat Langlois (Attack), Tyler Bobbin (MF), Jose Laureano (MF), Josh Merritt (Attack), Tyler Chattell (Defensive MF), Jared Bursell (Defense). Sophomores: Axel Stallman (MF), Ben Herbertez (MF).

New to varsity:

Senior: Jake Desrosiers (MF). Juniors: Jacob Rousseau (Defense).

Outlook: Coach Foley said about half the returning players practiced on their own and at least one went to camp. Their improvement is very noticable. As a result, the Chargers are much farther ahead of where they were at the end of last season. He said the team’s throwing and passing skills have improved, which is square one, but the Chargers are still rusty with scooping the ball off the ground when there’s pressure applied.

Chariho scored 52 goals last season, while giving up 146. In the final 11 days of the season, the Chargers hung with three teams that had a combined record of 8-24 after those games. Prior to that Chariho lost pretty handily every time out. The Chargers return their two leading scorers (Renner and Cleary) but graduated three players who accounted for 15 or 16 goals (one goal was never reported).

“I told them this year that if we shot 200 times last year we need to shoot 350 times this year. We need to get more shots on goal and to learn to control the ball better,” Foley said.

The defense is virtually all new with the exception of goalie Beaudreau, who missed about half last season. But, Foley said, the defenders are quick and “do have a defensive mindset as opposed to last year.” Thirty-eight players tried out for the team and 30 will make it.

Coach’s take: “I’m much more excited this year. We can hold a practice this year (rather than focus so much on fundamentals). We’re able to hold fast-break drills and stuff like that.

Asked what would constitute success, Foley said: “If we all play with a smile on our face, don’t get cheap (commit unnecessary penalties) and keep trying as hard as we can. I want everybody to have a positive experience. I’m not thinking about winning and losing. I don’t want us to get a lot of penalties. Last year we got killed on penalties. We need to be better disciplined and compete.”
