Preview: Chariho golf

Head coach:

Mike Nedwidek (15th season).

Last year:

Chariho finished with a 12-2 record (12-2 Southern Division) and placed third at the state meet in what was the best finish in program history.

Returning to varsity:

Seniors:

Sam Martel.

Juniors:

Corey Zegarzewski, Nick Chartier.

New to varsity:

Seniors:

Matt Pacillo, Tyler Richmond.

Juniors:

Tyler D’Alfonso, Christina Bond.

Freshmen:

Matt Lindenberg, Brennon Pafume, John Moody, Jake Berube, Tom LaPlante.

Outlook:

The Chargers’ 2013 performance ranks as the best in school history. Chariho shot its lowest team average for four top scorers (159.7 strokes) and posted its lowest state-meet score (316.5) as well as its lowest place (3rd). The previous best was 2009 when Chargers finished 7th with a score of 334.

Matching last year’s performance will be a challenge after the graduation of Brad Anderson, a Providence Journal All-State Second team pick, Kory Log and Oliver Martel, a pair of Southern Division Second teamers. That trio was remarkably consistent, averaging 40 to 41 per nine holes.

“We lost a tremendous amount of depth, so it will be difficult for us to shoot as low a score average as we had last year,” Nedwidek said. “But all things being equal, many Southern Division teams graduated key players. Our top four is solidified and we should be in the mix, but last year our one through eight could score well. We’re going to need at least two from a group of five newcomers to shoot respectably so we don’t have a big drop off in our fifth and six scoring slots.”

North Kingstown won the eight-team Southern Division at 12-1-1, edging second-place Chariho. The Chargers lost by two strokes to Coventry late, and Nedwidek lists the Oakers as a darkhorse behind the perennial favorite Skippers.

Individually, Zegarzewski, who averaged 38.9 strokes over nine holes, will have few peers state-wide.

“He’s one of the state’s top returning players,” Nedwidek said. “He knows how to score and all aspects of his game are strong. He’s a good ball striker and he’s gained distance as he’s matured. His game has no weaknesses.”

Chartier (44.3 average) and Martel (45.4) will play more prominent roles after battling for fifth and sixth scoring positions last year. D’Alfonso projects as the No. 4 golfer after a strong junior varsity campaign last year.

Coach’s take:

“Our first four are solidified, but there is a big dropoff experience-wise after that to five and six. Given the opportunity weather-wise to play more as weeks go by, I’m looking for the new players’ scores to improve.”
