Chariho’s DeSantis reaches semis at state tourney

PROVIDENCE — Chariho High’s Sal DeSantis advanced to the semifinals of the 220- pound class at the state wrestling tournament Friday night with a pair of victories.

DeSantis, the No. 2 seed, pinned Barrington’s Quinn Morvillo in 3 minutes, 35 seconds to reach today’s semifinal round at the Providence Career & Technical Academy.

He also pinned Narragansett’s Alexander Millen in 1:09 in his first bout.

DeSantis will face Exeter-West Greenwich’s Carl Neff in the semifinals. The Scarlet Knights are a Division II team and the two wrestlers have not competed this season.

“He is a quality wrestler,” Chariho coach Scott Merritt said of Neff.

Chariho’s Josh Merritt lost in the quarterfinals at 106 pounds to Bishop Hendricken’s Jonathan Celico via a pin (3:26). Celico, who lives in Westerly, is the No. 2 seed.

Merritt won his first two matches by one-point decisions — 8-7 against Warwick Veterans Nicholas Thompson and 5-4 against Ponaganset’s Kyle Forgetta.

Chariho’s James Costigan went 1-1 at heavyweight, losing in the quarterfinals via a pin against Spencer Winn, of South Kingstown. He won his first match by a pin against Narragansett’s Riley Chapman in 44 seconds.

Hunter Paine was 1-1 at 113 pounds, losing by decision and winning by decision.

Curtis Storrs won a match at 160 pounds with a forfeit, but lost his next two and was eliminated from the tournament.

Chariho is 18th with 19 points in the team standings. Defending champion Bishop Hendricken is in first with 111.5. Mt. Hope is second with 77.

Wrestling in the tournament resumes today at 10 a.m.


Westerly’s Shane Shortt (152) and Drew Widdifield (152) both lost in the quarterfinals of their respective weight classes.

Shortt lost to Hope’s Emmanuel Borsay 11-7. Shorrt won his first match via a tech fall (16-0).

Widdifield lost to Christian Torres of Mt. Hope in the semifinals 14-6. Torres is the No. 2 seed. Widdifield won his first match with a pin (1:09).

Westerly’s Dante Turano was 1-1 at 106 pounds, losing to No. 2 seed Jonathan Celico via a pin. He won his first match with a pin.

Ian Rose was 1-1 at 120 winning with a pin and losing via pin.

Marcus Comforti compiled a 2-1 record at 160. He won two matches with decision and was pinned in his second match.

Bob Deary was 1-1 at 170 pounds. Deary lost his first match by pin, but won in the consolation round via a pin.

Westerly is 22nd in the team standings with 15.5 points after Friday’s action was complete.

Two Westerly brothers, who attend Bishop Hendricken, advanced to the semifinals in their respective weight classes.

Nicholas Celico pinned two opponents at 113 pounds to reach the semifinals. He is the No. 1 seed.

His brother, Jonathan, the No. 2 seed at 106, reached the semifinals with two pins.

Abe Bloom, who also lives in Westerly, reached the semifinals at 113 pounds with pair of major decision.
