  • Chargers surprise Clippers

WOOD RIVER JCT. — Chariho High’s girls’ basketball team started 2014 on the right foot with an impressive 50-43 victory Tuesday over previously undefeated Cumberland in a Division I crossover game.

The Chargers (3-2, 1-0 Division I-South) produced one of their better offensive performances in many games, hitting 18 of 23 from the free-throw line and riding two career-high scoring efforts from sophomore guard Katie Cuddy (17 points) and sophomore forward Jamie Dobson (16 points). Cumberland fell to 4-1 (0-1 Division I-North).

“I’m very happy with our offense and defense tonight,” Chariho coach Arianna Dolock said. “We put Cuddy in an off-the-ball defensive position and that took some pressure off her. Defensively, Jenessa Perry, Dobson and Jess Perry took turns hawking their top scorer, holding her to two points.”

Chariho junior center Abby Cuddy produced another double-double with 10 points and 12 assists. Jess Perry led the Chargers in assists with four. The Chargers led 28-23 at halftime and maintained the edge in the second half, making nearly 80 percent of their free throws — a marked improvement from their 55 percent seasonal numbers from the line.

“It’s important that we improve our shooting, as we did tonight, as we protect leads late in games,” Dolock said.

Kaitlyn Engels, Taylor Fay and Sarah Marsland scored eight points each for Cumberland.

Chariho plays Portsmouth on the road 7 p.m. Tuesday.
