Letter: Resistance is futile, but so is shoveling along Route 1

Letter: Resistance is futile, but so is shoveling along Route 1

Today I received a summons from the town of Westerly regarding the cleaning of my sidewalk located on Route 1. We will pay the $50 fine.

I try to make it a point to clean it, but it is a futile effort as the snowplows just cover it up again. I would wait until they are done, but that usually involves moving a lot of heavy snow. I am 76 years old and have asthma. Even though I have a snowblower, it is very tiring for me to clean snow. No one will clean it because of the danger working next to the highway.

So the town has put me, and many other folks in a similar position, against the wall. Clean it, pay someone to clean it,  pay a fine or die trying.

Maybe five people a day walk by my home. Few to none on the entire street, including businesses, clean the sidewalk on Route 1.

I guess the politicians need to increase the town's coffers. I used to clean a long stretch of the sidewalk, but from now on I will not go past my property line.
