Letter: Reconstructing past from memory can be tricky

Rape is obviously a crime punishable by law. Recently we have heard a lot from politicians about attempted rape. That can be a problem. I recall that as an impulsive but not too rational young man I was rather “pushy” in some of my “romantic” encounters with girlfriends — although never “successfully.” Was that attempted rape? I really don't think so.

My problem is with politically motivated reconstructions of past events from memory. Memory can be fickle at best, even wrong, and alcohol can make it worse. It seems to me that political debate should be about what candidates intend to do, not what they did many years ago.
