  • Kaufman, town deserve praise for lacrosse program

As a board member of Westerly Area Youth Lacrosse, I was disappointed in some of the comments made at the recent Westerly Town Council hearing described in the Feb. 12 article in the Westerly Sun (“Lacrosse Draws Ire of Some in Bradford”) that questioned the behavior of the lacrosse program and its president, Dr. Adam Kaufman.

Everything that the program and Adam have done has been transparent, and we are committed to high standards of integrity and behavior. Dr. Kaufman has spent an extraordinary amount of his time and energy in building this successful program from scratch in such a short amount of time, and deserves appreciation for his efforts.

I also commend the town for supporting the program during its rapid growth to ensure a safe venue at the Bradford Preserve. The lacrosse program is an asset to our town, and the children deserve to have decent fields on which to play the great sport of lacrosse.
