Two days before Christmas, my son and I completed our final holiday food shopping. We’d just put it all away and I was starting to cook dinner when the doorbell rang. At my front stoop stood a man and a woman. Opening the door, I recognized Maria Allen, owner of Bella Vita hair salon, where she gives me terrific haircuts. They were holding my green pocketbook, which they’d found in the parking lot of the market.
I didn’t even know that it was missing! They’d spotted it lying on the ground, and rather than take it into the store, they looked at the address and returned it themselves.
Their thoughtfulness, their willingness to go out of their way for a stranger (Maria only recognized me after they arrived at my door) saved me from the nightmare of a lost wallet. I remain extremely grateful to both for their kindness and for the reminder that each of us can care for one another in ways both big and small, every day of the year. It was a wonderful Christmas gift!
