Letter: Congratulations to all on a great opening for Stonington schools

Now that the first week of school is behind us, I wanted to take the time to commend the Stonington school system. With all the budget uncertainty at the state capitol, it was nice to see that the school year started with smiling faces on the children as they began the new school year, eager to grow and learn.

From the Board of Education, the superintendent and central office staff, to each of the school’s administration, support staff and to the most important of them all, the teachers, our children return to school to learn. Whether it was their first day of kindergarten, middle school or high school, our teachers and staff were there with hearty welcomes and excited to teach our kids.

Those involved at Deans Mill and West Vine elementary schools deserve special recognition as the buildings are being renovated and upgraded. The students returned to what looks like a construction site and yet the first day was smooth sailing.

Stonington residents should be proud of our town as their tax dollars are wisely spent and our school system is better than ever. Now if only our elected leaders in Hartford could get their act together and pass a fair, balanced and just budget so Stonington can continue to focus on educating our children.
