Wilcox Park is hosting its 32nd annual Garden Market Fair Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will once again be a unique seasonal opportunity to shop in one location for all things garden-related.
Exciting new additions this year include the presence of environmental organizations, including the Westerly Land Trust, Save the Bay, the R.I. DEM bug monitoring program, and the URI Master Gardeners. Free soil testing will be available by the Master Gardeners. All of these organizations will be set up on the Esplanade in the Park (across from Town Hall.)
Two large equipment vendors, Rhode Island Harvesting Company and Pat’s Power, will be showcasing various landscaping equipment for homeowners and small businesses. Bring your questions to them and learn about the latest developments with landscaping equipment. Food will be provided by the Westerly High School culinary class. They will feature clam chowder, lobster bisque, and clam fritters. While enjoying the students’ culinary creations, say hello to our local VFW Post 8955 that will be set up in the same area.
The heart of the Garden Market Fair, however, is the local nurseries, growers, and vendors of all things garden-related. Expect to find great deals on small trees, annuals, perennials, vegetables, and herbs, as well as beautiful hanging baskets, garden statuary, dried flower arrangements, and pottery.
At the Park’s historic bandstand (“gazebo”) the volunteers and staff of Wilcox Park will be offering “pieces of the park” which will include various small trees, shrubs, and perennials. Within the bandstand itself, the Kids Corner will be catering to the youngest gardeners. Here, very colorfully hand-painted miniature bird houses, lady bugs, tulips and white-faced garden snakes are available to children. They will have an opportunity to create a little garden of their own with small plants like “hens and chickens,” moss and little rocks. Our hopes are that some of the children will get hooked onto the joys of gardening so that they can enjoy a lifetime of it.
The Westerly Town Band will be entertaining everyone with a concert held in the vicinity of the Wilcox Memorial fountain at 1:30 p.m. In conjunction with the fair, a health and wellness component event will also be taking place on park grounds. The third annual “East Meets Westerly” will showcase our local businesses from yoga to nutrition. Much is to be learned by a visit to this section!
So mark your calendar, this is window shopping at its best! Come and support our local businesses and Wilcox Park. The park’s display of spring blooms will be in full session. The flowering trees at this time include the cherry trees behind the Columbus statue, the dogwood trees throughout the park, with pink and white displays, and the lilac and viburnum bushes in shades of lavender and white.
