The crack of the bat, the roar of the crowd, the singsong voices of vendors selling peanuts and Cracker Jack…..it’s baseball season again! I was born in Boston and grew up in Boston and its suburbs. My grandfather was a lifelong Red Sox fan and took me to my first game when I was about 7 years old. Later, when we were a bit older, my brother and I would take the subway into Fenway with our baseball gloves on (because you never know if you’ll get an opportunity to catch a ball—we wanted to be prepared) and go to games ourselves. For a while, my parents split season tickets with about five other families so we’d get tickets to about 10 games per year.
I still get choked up when I recall the phenomenal season in 2004 — finally, after 86 years, the Red Sox had won the World Series. I only wish my grandfather had been alive for that. If you follow baseball at all, you probably know that the Sox have won two more series since that wonderful first win, in 2007 and again last year in 2013.
As part of winning the World Series, the winning team is presented with a trophy. Everyone refers to it as the World Series Trophy, although I just learned, thanks to Wikipedia, that it is officially called the Commissioner’s Trophy. It has been awarded each year since 1967, the only exception being 1994, because of the player’s strike. The current trophy was redesigned for the 2000 World Series and is made by Tiffany & Co., the famed New York City jeweler.
I am extremely excited to announce that the 2013 Red Sox World Series Trophy is coming to Westerly this Friday, April 25, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Even more thrilling is that it is coming to Westerly Library. That’s right, folks! Anyone interested in seeing the trophy and having their picture taken with it can begin lining up at 1:30 p.m. The event will take place in our Old Main Reading Room, which is just inside the library entrance, overlooking Broad Street. You are welcome to bring your own camera (or Smartphone) for the picture. Red Sox staff will be on hand providing security and they will also use your camera for a photo. If you prefer, there will be a professional photographer there and he will take your photo, although that is a photo you would then have to purchase from him.
So let’s embrace the 2014 baseball season by kicking it off with a very special opportunity to see the World Series trophy in person. And……go Sox!
